Elena's Quilt

I am making a quilt for my friend Teresa's daughter Elena. She asked me to use an IKEA comforter cover and some very old quilt squares she trash picked in her Detroit neighborhood. The quilt squares were diamond shaped and pretty sad looking. They were hand sewn onto newspaper that was dated 1961.

I cut them into rectangles. Put the blue from the back of the comforter around each one. Now they look like little paintings. Here are some of my favorites.

All done. IKEA meets Detroit trash meets Kaffe Fassett. Ran out of blue. Added the blue Kaffe Fassett circles and the reddish trim. One of my favorite things about quilting is the moment when the quilt decides what will happen. I don't like to plan ahead. When I ran out of the IKEA blue I had to find something else, then that wasn't long enough etc. etc. In this one corner, lots of planning was done by the quilt...
